Google: OK. Other search engines: 100% better!

Why to consider other search engines:
  • Google has a virtual monopoly. Not good. Until I read an article int The Guardian Weekly 01.02.13 p. 27 by Tim Adams,  I googled without considering other search engines. I HAVE FOUND ONE WHICH SHOW THAT GOOGLE IS DULL AND BORING. More about my choice later.
  • Google has created wealth faster and more efficiently than any company in history.
  • it is probably the most effective generator of advertising dollars ever invented.
  • It knows a great deal about us which we may not want it to know.

Alternatives:
  • DuckDuckGo. Good for unbiased searches, maintaining privacy, finding illicit content.
  • Wolfram Alpha.Good for historical facts, mathematical problems, nutritional information, cheating on your crossword.
  • Yossarian Lives! Good for generating ideas.
  • Facebook Graph Search. Good for narrowing down photo searches or holiday recommendation, onlne dating.
  • Startpage. Good for finding results without being spied on.  (Compiled by Julia Chapman.)
My choice: (at least for now ) is Yossarian Lives!   A photo-based search engine that uses metaphors to generate images related to your search. Rather than web results, it provides pictures representing related ideas. I was so excited when I discovered this site.

Example -

  •  go to Yossarian Lives!
  •  search for NEWS & VIEWS hantsport
  •  many colour pics appear.
  • click on pic of mayor and councillors at public meeting
  • click visit page
  • and there is the page from the blog and info about the meeting.
And of course you can bookmark your favorite. I 'm going to bookmark them all.
