How climate change could affect Hantsport

Could be affected:
  • waste water treatment plant - in Kings County but Hantsport uses it.
  • water treatment facility
  • streets: Chittick Avenue, the bottom of Holmes Hill
  • senior citizens's housing at Chittick

Priorities for action:

  • storm water management
  • green technology
  • historical and current mapping of erosion and flooding
  • Exit 8 - critical but outside town. CAO Rob Frost spoke to Department of Transportation to mitigate the risks.
These topics were discussed on November 19 at a public meeting held by the Municipal Climate Change Action Plan (MCCAP) committee. Two members of the public attended - one resident and one media member.  The committee is a branch of the Planning Advisory Committee of the town.

Why was this meeting significant? Under the MCCAP, Hantsport qualifies for $120,000 a year from the federal government. This is tied to the gas tax and is based on population. The money can only be applied to infrastructure. And the town must apply with details of its plans to get the money. Deadline December 31, 2013.

This year, the town has set aside the money for the upgrade on the water facilitiy. In the past, the town applied the money to the Prince Street water and sewer project.
