Wilcox Trail honours Wheet and Jerry

The Wilcox Trail plaque was officially presented to Wheet Wilcox on October 15, 2013.

In 1991, the Hanstport couple was camping in Anchorage, Alaska. They spoke to a campground host who introduced them to the campground and gave them information about the area. Wheet and Jerry were delighted with this service. And in the next few years they hosted campsites in Michigan, Florida, and British Columbia.

In 1995 the provincial government headed a public commission asking what people wanted in its provincial parks. Wheet and Jerry suggested the host program. In 1996 Nova Scotia introduced the host concept with five hosts including the Wilcoxs at Blomidon Park. And they continued as hosts in provincial parks until Jerry died.

The Wilcoxs loved to camp and they loved sharing this with everyone. They were proud of Nova Scotia and they promoted Nova Scotia. They began camping at Blomidon in the 1970s and they had four generations of their family there at one time. Six years ago heir kids donated a bench there.

The Nova Scotia government recently purchased 300+ acres which now joins Blomidon Park to Scotts Bay. And now the Wilcox trail leads walkers to that designation. The plaque and trail honour Wheet and Jerry for their contribution to camping in Nova Scotia. The trail will be developed in the future.

Early in November, Katy Parsons-Fielding, Wheet's grand-daugher and producer of CBC's Main Street, interviewed Wheet when the couple was honoured. "Jerry would have been so please," Wheet commented.
