LIBRARY COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS LEGION HALL

The benefits of the Legion Hall at 10 Main Street for the town's new library:

1. The town owns the building.
2. The town maintains the building.
3. Extraordinary location on Main Street is highly visible.
4. Engineers examined the building and found it well-built and well-maintained.
5. The upper floor is 1400 sq.ft. and is larger than the current library space. The rooms downstairs can be used for meetings. There is also a kitchen downstairs.

Deputy Mayor Harold Bulger presented the Library Committee's preliminary report to Hantsport Town Council at the Committee of the Whole Meeting on December 17. He distributed copies of the report at that time.

The committee had considered four options:
1. a new complex for the library and related facilities.
2. a stand alone library in an existing building.
3. purchase a retired bookmobile (no longer available)
4. citizens to rely on Windsor and Wolfville libraries.

The town's budgetary restraints lead the committee to focus on #2 - a stand alone library in an existing building.

The upstairs room is not impeded by posts. The heating system includes two furnaces which are relatively new and well maintained. The ceiling is insulated. The building is used less than 12 hours a week currently.

Improvements:
1. fresh air ventilator - est. $4000
2. washroom renovations  - est. $8500.
3. wheelchair access
- outside ramp to upstairs est. $9500.
- inside lift est. $21,000.
- additional electric wiring, security, communications, shelving, furniture set. est.
$24,000.
- cooling systems - heat pumps for each furnace - est. $14,000.
- cosmetic painting
- new windows $5000.

Harold stated that the Friends of the Hantsport Library will lead fund-raising for the new library. Presentations will be made to the joint council meeting of Windsor and West Hants and to Kings County council. Glooscap will also be involved. The  deadline to move the current library out of the school is August 2015.

Town Council will discuss the proposal at its next meeting on January 7, 2014, at 7 PM during its monthly meeting
