COW 5: Questions from the public

Jeff Starratt questioned the legality of using 15 passenger vans to transport children.  Karrie will investigate this.

Bill Preston asked if anything can be done with the poor condition of the building at the corner of William and Oak. CAO Frost replied that he had just heard from the owner. Her contractor is currently working in Halifax but will return to Hantsport.

Phil Zamora asked if the UARB hearings will be held in town. Yes.

Sally Zamora asked if the town had considered the cost of shutting down the pool and demolishing it.

Toni Heatley mentioned that she had attended a public meeting in Springhill which discussed  dissolution.  People were reminded there that dissolution is a process not a done deal.

Phil asked what is the cost of decommissioning a town. The CAO stated that the province will support this financially.

Sally asked what services does the town currently share. The CAO listed services such as sewer, water, RCMP, IT services, planning, fire, garbage.

How much will a long term care facility contribute to the town? No one knows.

What is the deadline to stop dissolution? The CAO replied that there is no firm answer to this. He understands that it is any time before any decision  is made by the UARB.

Toni stated that a plebiscite is necessary legally to incorporate a town but not to dissolve it. This is causing a wave of concern in the town. She asked if the town would consider this. Council took a vote. The mayor and CLLRs Rob Fredericks, Paul Morton, and Shannon Cunningham voted against this.  DM Harold Bulger voted for it.

And village status? The CAO stated that years ago the provincial government encouraged this but no longer.
