At ‘Imagine Hantsport 2013’, Don Hussey, Bill Preston and Deputy Mayor Hantsport Harold Bulger, assisted by then Liberal Candidate Claude O’Hara, volunteered to look into the feasibility for the establishment of a Long-Term Care Facility in Hantsport. They were assisted by CAO Rob Frost.Glooscap First Nation was subsequently invited to ascertain their interest in such a project. Mr O’Hara, MBA, became Executive Director of the Glooscap First Nation Economic Development Corp. Glooscap FN arranged for the funding of a “Feasibility Study for the Establishment of a Long-term Care Facility”.The feasibility study concluded: “A proposal for a 36-bed Long –Term Care Home in the Glooscap-Hantsport area would be unique in the province of Nova Scotia and likely unique across Canada.”Further such a Hantsport LTC home would have a significant economic impact on the area creating 70 direct jobs and 35 secondary jobs. This would in effect replace two-thirds of the 152 jobs lost from the recent closing of two major industries in Hantsport. The property taxes are estimated to be $137,000 per year!It is expected a Request for Proposal for LTC facilities will be released by the province during this year.Don Hussey, P.Eng.Hantsport, NS

Mr. Hussey,
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful for Hantsport but I'm a little concerned about the validity of the numbers tour suggesting. Mostly the tax revenue number. Is this number based on using a commercial tax rate, residential tax rate and is there a requirement to pay a portion of the tax base back to the housing authority? The number that I was suggested was much lower. If that number is accurate it will be wonderful for Hantsport.
