Glooscap Landing update

Glooscap Landing at Exit 8A off Highway 101 is designed to be a destination area centered on Mi’kmaq culture. In the summer of 2015, development will start. By the fall 2016, the service station and restaurant will open on the 26 acre site. The plan includes opportunities such as commercial business, a cultural centre, and green space. It is estimated that Glooscap Landing will bring $1 billion in spinoffs in the next eight years. The goal of Glooscap First Nation Economic Development includes being independent of government funding.

Jason Peters and Scott Olszowiec, representatives of the Glooscap First Nations Economic Development Corporation spoke at the April meeting of the Lockhartville branch of Women's Institute of Nova Scotia. Jason is the Economic Development Officer and CEO of the Glooscap Economic Development Corporation. Scott is the corporation’s Community Outreach Coordinator.

Jason corrected the misconception that it would benefit just Glooscap First Nations. “It will benefit the whole region in areas including employment and eduction. Its Board of Directors includes people outside Glooscap First Nations.“Glooscap Landing puts the Ray Ivany report into action.”See LINK

While outlining the history of Canadian First Nations since World War I, Jason recommended people read The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King. (It can be requested at the Hantsport Library.)

  1. I note that it is forecast to bring in $1 billion in spinoffs within 8 years so does that mean the Development will then at some time, within that period of time, repay the Government & the taxpayers the $25+ million grant they have been given ?
Surely they will do that if they truly want to be independent of Government funding!
