Canadian Women’s History
Canadian women have achieved a great deal, not only in the century since the vote was granted in several provinces but also in the centuries before that milestone. Women played key roles in the settlements of New France, among First Peoples, and in business, politics, sports, literature, education and beyond.
Our listings of recent books on Canadian women’s history include biographies of famous women such as Nellie McClung, Lucy Maud Montgomery, and Emily Carr as well as of lesser-known figures like Marie-Anne Lagimodière, Charlotte Whitton and Elsie MacGill.
We also present a selection of the many recent books about Canadian women and society, including books about teachers, journalists, athletes, painters and workers as well as more comprehensive histories of women in New France and in Canada.
