Hantsport Public Works Update

Any changes in the operations of Public Works in Hantsport will be slow, according to Municipal Engineer Rick Sherrard, Director of Public Works. He is currently learning how things have been done in town. Residents continue to pay their water bills and taxes at the Hantsport Town Hall. His office is located in that building.

Peter Johnston is the supervisor for West Hants West Public Works. The facility on Chittick Avenue is the base of operation and equipment for the county. Prior to this, all the equipment was stored in the basement of the West Hants Municipal Building.

Most of the department's daily activities are focused on the growth centres - Falmouth and Three Mile Plains. Three of his former employees plus three more report to Johnston in Hantsport every morning for their assignments.

Contrary to the information on the West Hants site, Karrie Ritchie is Public Works Administrative Assistant and can be reached at 902-684-3219. Sherrard encourages residents with problems relating to public works to contact Karrie.

Prior to the first snowfall, the sidewalk which narrows at Danny Murray's house beside the post office was altered to allow the snowplough to navigate it. Crosswalks which did not have an apron for wheelchair access will be changed in the spring.

"Opportunities and challenges were identified at the public meeting," Sherrard said. "Public Works has been reviewing several projects in Hantsport. Repairs to the water system and re-paving Holmes Hill are now shovel-ready, just waiting for infrastructure financing."
