Rose-Marie Care Home (RMCH) is accepting registrations for its Adult Day Program, its Respite Beds/Short Term Beds program, sitter services, long term beds, and palliative care, at 21 William Street in Hantsport.

RMCH, founded in 1997, is owned by the local Joof family and provides specialized care for people living with Alzheimer’s and other Dementia. Other older seniors are encouraged to enjoy a social environment while remaining independent in their community. It also support family caregivers by providing respite for them, allowing them to maintain a healthy work and life balance, and to rest and enjoy their lives.

Managing Director Regina Greenslade has worked in the nursing field for 12 years and did one-on-one care at Haliburton House, She and daycare facilitator Dee Joof follow the Eden Philosophy which advocates holistic person-centered care. It involves care for the patient and for the whole family which is affected by the disease.

Dee knows from her family experience that family members need to learn how to respond particularly to a person with dementia’s unusual actions and behaviors.  Caregivers can be abused and find life frustrating. Dee is committed to RMCH acting as an education center. Family can learn to love the sufferer exactly the way they are.

The following a poems from  Bob’s Poems: Come With Me into Alzheimer Disease. Kings County Robert Taylor was diagnosed with Alzheimer in 1998 at the age of 55. He attended a support group in Berwick and found it helpful. When he discovered that his wife Donna was attending a group for caregivers, he asked, "Why do you need a support group? I am the one with the disease." Donna need and appreciated the support the group gave her.

With these poems, he relates his experiences and feelings.

TEN BRAIN CELLS

Have you ever watch someone die,
ten brain cells at a time?
How many brain cells do we have
at any given time?
Just imagine what it might be like-
ten brain cells at a time.
Have you any idea how long it might take-
ten brain cells at a time?
Not very long for some of us -
for sure,
ten brain cells at a time.

A SPECIAL DAY

One day last week I got a peek
at the life I once had.
I could remember old faces and familiar places
and I wasn't frightened or anxious all day.
What a treat that was for me -
It was as if I had been set free,
from that horrible disease they call A.D.
It was a special day for me.
