ENJOYING LIFE

Avondale Sky Winery - a converted church

On May 5, 2011, Hantsport Captain Ray Riley with the help of many people landed the former Anglican Church at Avondale wharf. They had left Walton on May 4 and spent the night off Hantsport's wharf.

Today the building which maintains many of the features of the church stands on a quiet road in Avondale. A remarkable feat. A remarkable winery.

Proud owners are Stewart Creaser and Lorraine Vassalo.

And, across the street, another church. I wonder who designed the unique steeple.

Edible Art Cafe

Pages 2 and 3 of the Edible Art menu.

For a delightful dining experience, Lynda and I recommend Edible Art in Greenwich. It's on the former site of Horton High School. Once the Horton bus garage, this lovely restaurant has a bright modern decor.

Here was the menu the day Lynda and I went to Edible Art Cafe for lunch. The writing on the menu shows the dishes we ordered. And enjoyed!

Lynda ordered a good size helping of Herbed Tomato Bisque soup and Valley Wrap Chicken Curry Wrap. And I had a beautiful Edible Art Salad with Havarti Mushroom Melt. See menus for descriptions of the ingredients. We split  the huge chocolate macaroon. Beverages? We had some but I don't remember what. Lovely meal. Great service.
Amazing decor.

Several different local scenes are available for the face of the tide clock.

Spectacular View of Cornwallis River

A little known park - and one with no sign - gives an panoramic view of the Cornwallis River. The above photo shows only a 90 degree view.

It's located on the Old Post Road.

How to find it:
Take Exit 10 from HWY 101.
Turn right at the Irving Station.
Turn at the first left.
Drive up the hill, and it's on your right.

Until a few years ago there were two houses on this site. From what I understand, Parks Canada  bought one and had it demolished. The other was moved to another site.

Enjoy a picnic.

For a snack or lunch or breakfast, visit the Evangeline Cafe across from the Irving. Some say it serves the best hamburgers in the province. Others, including me, rave about the pies!

Hamburgers at Halls Harbour  August 20/14

A fellow dog owner told me the other day about discovering hamburgers at Halls Harbour. Perhaps a little more expensive than down on the valley floor, but a bargain when you consider the spectacular views.

Here is one of its gorgeous websites.

Luckett Vineyards  August 13/14

For the first instalment of the new series Enjoying Life,  Lynda King and I visited Luckett Vineyards on the South Mountain between Gaspereau and Avonport. We had heard that it was terrific but neither us had been there.

A magnificent view of the valley looking towards the North Mountain and Cape Blomidon is offered to diners. We ate outdoors under a white tent-like top. We both ordered soup because there was a cool breeze.

Lynda had vegetable beef soup (Market soup) made with fresh local vegetables. (I didn't take photos of the dishes).  Hers had tender beef, celery, onion, chopped broccoli, potatoes, and carrots. "It was a bit salty for my taste."

I had seafood chowder. It was a creamy soup with a splash of a red liquid on the top - perhaps liquid paprika but not too hot. It contained lobster, shrimp, scallops, haddock, potatoes, carrots, onions, and celery.

There was nothing obviously gluten free.

Both were served with a small portion of bread and butter. We agreed that a hungry person would have needed two portions.

But we had enough room for dessert. We split a generous piece of chocolate cheesecake with strawberry sauce drizzled on it. A dollop of whipped cream and several blueberries accompanied it. Elegantly served, of course.

Including tip, we each paid about $20. Luckett is a good businessman. The customer receives a delightful experience with great service, convenient parking, and attention to detail. Soup, for example, is served in a bowl which resembles a taller than usual cup.

We agreed that we might go back and try other items. I have heard that the cheese board is great with a glass or bottle of Luckett's wine.
