Icebergs on Lake Winnipeg

Comment posted Mar.3/13

Hi Heather , here’s a note from an 80 year old friend of mine whom recently migrated back
to Winnipeg via Ottawa. It’s interesting the news he received from this Nurse out there, FYI:

I was at the local hospital for my periodic check on my pacemaker. The nurse happened to mention Lake Winnipeg. I told her about your e-mail and the icebergs. She knew all about them. Apparently a few winters back just as the ice was forming on the lake there was a severe storm that broke up the ice and drove it into the southern end of the lake where it piled up on the beaches, with huge waves which froze over the piles. Come spring and the thaw these huge piles of ice began to float out into the lake. Icebergs on Lake Winnipeg!! All I remember about winter on the lake was going to Gimli, the Icelandic settlement and seeing the fishermen going out on the ice in their big snow mobiles. They actually put nets down under the ice and catch fish!! Those Icelanders are smart!!
