Marilynn Carey and The CAREY ME Fund

(LR) WINS members Carolyn McLeod and Glenda Braham with Marilynn Carey.

Marilynn Carey spoke at the March meeting of the  Lockhartville Branch of the Women's Institute of Nova Scotia.  The fund gives dying people a choice - the hospital or their home.

Bill,  Marilynn's husband, wanted to die at home10 years ago. He had a health insurance plan which provided the assistance he needed. The couple realised that not all people are that lucky. The CAREY ME fund started nine years ago as a memorial fund to provide financial assistance for people in the area who prefer to die at home.

To date, the charity has raised almost $200,000. It needs $10,000 a year in donations. Donors receive a charitable tax receipt.
In 2012, it had 81 referrals.
The impact has been significant, according to Marilynn. Many have found that it improved the quality of life of the loved ones to the end. The funds go directly to the family members for treatment, medicine, and transportation.
Marilynn is available to speak to local groups about the Fund.
