I know our health care system needs radical changes. I hear this and read this nearly every day. But when the system works, people need to know. It certainly worked for me recently!
I fell on black ice at the corner of Avon Street Extension and HWY 1 around 9 AM on Saturday. My right hip, elbow, and wrist hit the asphalt. I walked home but could not straighten my right arm. I was sure it was just a sprain. Ken left for the day.
I researched sprained and broken elbows on the Internet and in my books. The conclusion: if you can't straighten your arm, go to emergency.
My good friend Lorraine McQueen took me to the Windsor Hospital around 1 PM. Based on media reports about poor service at emergency units generally and stories about the Windsor Hospital particularly, I expected to be there til 6 or 9 PM.
I went through reception, gave my info to a nurse, answered specific questions from a paramedic about my injury, had my arm X-rayed, saw the doctor who put a splint on my arm, and had my arm placed in a sling by a nurse. Lorraine had waited with me and drove me home by 3:30 PM. Only 2 1/2 hours!
On Sunday the Red Hatters were scheduled to see QAAW's The Long Weekend but I obviously couldn't drive. Nancy Hussey picked me up. It was terrific! Afterwards we all went to R & G's to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. Bev Poole pointed out that my fingers were swelling. When I returned home, I took the ring off my right hand. It helps to gave nurses around you!
Following the doctor's instructions, Ken drove me to Mud Creek Clinic in Wolfville at 9 AM Monday. Janet McNaughton, my doctor, works there but was on hospital duty. I went as a walk-in.
When Dr. Doran saw me at 10 AM, he reported that the x-rays had arrived from Windsor. I had broken a small piece off a bone in my elbow.
He looked at the elbow, rotated my wrist, and stated that my elbow was stable. For treatment, he recommended holding on to a clawhead hammer and rotating my wrist several times twice a day. I was home by 10:30 AM.
The Windsor doctor had suggested I see an orthopaedic surgeon and I will. But my elbow is better. I certainly will not have any unnecessary surgery.
Everyone was kind to me and I thank them for their concern and help.
Changes are certainly needed in the medical system but the care I received was the best!
