VALENTINE DINNERS CONTRIBUTE TO COMMUNITY

Chris Fry's pics

In 1994, the year before Hantport's Centennial, the town was divided into five neighbourhoods. Each raised money for a project. The town matched that amount.
One built a sign for Riverbank Cemetery. Another installed a bench at the post office. And another restored the William Hall Memorial.
District 3 developed the John Wiley Walkway from Smith Crescent to Foundry Road and planted trees. Its fundraiser was dinner. Following the Centennial Year in 1995, it has held a valentine dinner as a fund raiser every year, according to committee member Carolyn Folker.
These dinners have raised $22,843+ and through the years donated it to the Hantsport Memorial Community Centre, Hantsport Fire Department, and the Hantsport & Area Food Bank. All the food is donated except the meat. A roast beef dinner with all the trimmings is the favorite. The SaveEasy in Wolfville cooks and slices the meat. In 2013, the committee raised $2076. It was the first year the weather forced the committee to reschedule the dinner.

Carolyn is hoping similar events in the five neighbourhoods can be scheduled for the town's 120th anniversary in 2015.
