COW: PROPOSED RENOVATIONS SCHOOL and more

Hantsport students will not be bused during renovations to the school. Everyone in the town will be delighted with this news which Project Manager David Floyd delivered at the Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting on May 21. AVRSB Member Phil VanZoost accompanied him. Renovations will begin in the summer and will continue in the fall when the students are in the school.

Floyd focused on two issue:
1. What will we do first?
2. How can we get more money?

What do we do first?

  • project goes to tender
  • install new electric and sewer systems.
  • waterproof the back of the school
  • replace the yellow exterior cladding
Later:
  • mechanical renovations
  • full ventilation
  • new lights and ceilings
  • upgrade washrooms
  • get building up to code
  • install cafeteria
  • install an elevator
  • renovations to the gym
  • and more
2. More money!
The renovations - estimate $4 million
The grant - $3.2 million.

" The aim is to make the building as flexible as possible. We will be using the school steering committee to make our decisions," Van Zoost said.

The numbers for Trihalomethanes (THMs) in the water are below100, Martin Kehoe reported. The usual numbers at this time of year are usually 200+ parts per million. THMs have been found to produce cancer in rats. The Department of the Environment recommends a count of less than 100. The US Environmental Protection Agency recommends less than 80.

The town has been conducting a pilot project using one of two possible solutions to the problem. Council members agreed it seemed to be working. Coagulation pulls the organic matter out of the water. The town is still working on the exact costs for the system, and how best to implement it.

The range of costs given to the town vary from $600,000 to $1.2 million. "We are thinking that we should be closer to the lower costs," CAO Rob Frost stated.

Water is leaking from the pool. It could be cracks, the water works system, or the filtration system. The town is investigating costs to repair the 50+ year old pool.
