Scotia Investments Library???

"Does Hantsport have a library?" This was one of the first questions Susan Oickle
asked when she considered moving here.
(LR) Margot Bureaux, Lois Burgess, Susan, Frances Newman, Lorraine McQueen.

Hantsport Town Council voted at its public meeting on July 25 for the Hantsport Public Library to vacate the Hantsport School in August 2015.  Councillor Margot Bureaux - council's representative on the Annapolis Valley Regional Library Board (AVRL) - made the motion which was seconded and passed with no opposition. The community has two years to find a place for the library, to build or renovate the space, and to move the library to another site. The AVRL will supply the books, the librarians, and computers.

Mayor Rob Zwicker advised the council to "proceed with caution." Council agreed to meet with interested parties to move forward.

Council will take no action until its September meeting when its decision is official. When asked about the Friends of the Hantsport Public Library immediately starting fund raising, the mayor approved this.  Chairperson of the Friends of the Hantsport Public Library Lorraine McQueen stated that the group can take no action until council's decision is official.

Following the meeting, Regional Librarian of the Annapolis Valley Regional Library Frances Newman stated she will write to Scotia Investments to see if it has a building which could be designated the Scotia Investments Library.

West Hants Councillor and Chair of the Annapolis Valley Regional Library Shirley Pineo is asking the provincial government to expand the Gas Tax agreement. Currently it applies to trails, sewer and water. She advocates applying it also to fire stations and libraries.

Lorraine applied imaginative thinking to the proposed library. If it includes a historical museum, displays devoted to the Shamrocks and William Hall, and a genealogical centre, it would attract visitors.

   Two questions:
  • when will the library be renovated?
  • will the library continue to serve the public during renovations?
