Colleen offers 8 month artist residency

Colleen Wolstenholme of Hants Border knows from personal experience how hard it is for recent graduates of Nova Scotia College of Art and Design to become know. Particularly if that student is a sculptor. She was there in 1986 when she graduated.

This prompted her to offer an 8 month free residency in her studio in her home on Avon Street. It is open to recent graduates working in sceptre, jewellery, and ceramics to apply for. Colleen and Sue, her mother, are also raising money for the project. And eventually to establish a garden and sculpture park for the public.

"Sculptures face more challenges than painters because it's costly to set up a studio," according to Colleen. She estimates that she paid over $50,000 for the equipment in her studio. Colleen is currently planning to build a forge. She wants to give graduates opportunities to put together bodies of work to illustrate their talents.  They can then attract attention in the Atlantic Provinces, nationally, and internationally.

Colleen graduated in 1992 with a maser of Fine ARts and is currently working on her doctorate at York University. For several years she focused on feminism and is now working on mapping the brain and LED sculpture.

The two above are from her feminist period.
