FOR MARCH 8: A WOMAN WHO CHANGED YOUR LIFE

SATURDAY MARCH 8

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

To recognize the special day, tell us about one woman who changed your life. There were probably many.
You can be anonymous if you prefer.

Here is my story:

I remember Sue Simpson who died her curly red hair green.
We attended a conventional southern Ontario school in the 1960s. No one made waves. We were all individuals (I guess)  but we were like cookies made by one cookie cutter. We dressed  the same. Now I realize  we were nice kids but we did not think for ourselves. I know I didn't.
Except Sue. She was intelligent but she did not follow the crowd. She wrote poetry and plays. She dressed differently. She thought for herself. She didn't follow the party line. Neither her picture nor her name is in the yearbook. And she had more fun than I did! She did not need anyone's approval.
I continued to be conventional for many years until one day I started to think for myself.
I lost track of Sue but she came to my mother's funeral. She changed her name to Frances which means freedom. We have been writing ever since several times a year. And Fran continues to think for herself!

Have you a story to share?
