Future Options for the Red Barn

Discussion Paper
February 2014
Purpose:
This discussion paper was developed to help focus discussion on the condition and future of the Red Barn

Background

In January 2012 the HMCC Board circulated a discussion paper for public review that outlined the issues facing HMCC.  It pointed out that the Red Barn is now used primarily for storage and past HMCC Boards have decided to spend no more funds on its upkeep or improvement.   Those Boards were aware of the significant costs associated with the preservation, upkeep and repair of Churchill House and set a priority on the House.

Current Condition of the Red Barn

Among some citizens there is a strong nostalgic attachment to the Red Barn, and its historic past.  However, in recent years its role in the community has been significantly reduced.  Its current usefulness is limited, electricity has been cut off and it is deteriorating and in need of both cosmetic and structural repairs.  It is uncertain if sufficient funds could be raised to support its preservation or restoration and whether this effort would be appropriate given the needs facing Churchill House.

Role of the HMCC Board

Since 2012 the HMCC Board has been investigating the best course of action.  The Board has considered many options but is deterred by the costs associated with any of the many restoration and reconfiguration projects that have been considered.  The Board has decided to put the following options before the public for input.

Some Possible Options For the future:

Red Barn

  1. Leave it closed and allow it to deteriorate at its own pace.
  2. Restore it to a usable state and define its use.
  3. Dismantle the current structure.
  4. Repair as needed into the future

Consultation Process
Given the long history of the HMCC and the investment of so many of our fellow citizens in its role in our community it is important to consult as widely as possible before making decisions on the future of the this historic building

The Board hopes you will join in the discussion.
