More on the African Baptist Church in Lockhartville

All I can tell you from my research on the old church is; I have copies of the 2 original deeds showing where Benjamin Shaw Jr. & John Porter donated land for the church to be built on. One of my relatives, Oliver Lockhart who owned a store & ran the post office there was a witness to one of the deeds. The church was built in 1859 & either burned or was torn down cir. late 1800s. There is a grave yard there with no markers and no one seems to know exactly where it was located on the site & with the exception of one person( John Provo), who was buried there. The church & the surrounding black African community are shown on “Churches 1872 map” of kings co. There was a congregation of 14 when the church opened it’s doors in 1859. The minister was Rev. James Thomas & 2 of the deacons were Daniel & Dennis Doleman, who lived across the road from the church. My sources; African Baptist Assn. of N.S., minutes at the Acadia Library, Deeds from Access N.S., St. Clair Patterson & 2 other sources.
