No subsidized milk for Hantsport students.

I sent the following email to Hantsport School Principal Colin Chase:

Feb. 20, 2014.
Good afternoon, Colin.

Several schools have a milk program. Why doesn't Hantsport?
Thanks!

What do you mean by a milk program? Why are you asking?
Schools with milk programs as I believe you might mean also have cafeterias and people to staff them.
We have a breakfast basket program available to all students which consists of fruit, muffins made by staff members and cereal. These baskets are prepared by staff members who come in before work to get them ready.
We also have Grab and Go breakfasts once or twice a month where staff members make smoothies and muffins, or milk and fruit, or pancakes, again available to all students.
I'm curious about your motivation and the results of this reply. I will be quite concerned if any of this information is used to portray the school in a bad light.
After renovations are finished we will have a cafeteria and will hopefully be able to expand programs including a hot lunch program.
We have volunteers from Home and School and parents who also help.
Regards,
Colin.

It was a simple question. Kids need milk. You had a milk program last year. Thanks for your prompt reply, Colin.

To Heather:
We had milk available to students last year. This was overseen by
volunteers who are no longer available to do this. We need a cafeteria
and a cafeteria supervisor to oversee this for the future if no
volunteers are available.

The province provides a subsidy to schools which reduces the cost of a container of milk to 35 cents, according to an employee in the finance department at the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board on February 21.
She was surprised that the Hantsport School does not have a milk program. The principal decides whether or not to have the program. In most schools the class room teacher brings the milk to the class.

The province provides a subsidy for the school to provide milk because provides essential nutrients to children.
Most schools take advantage of this subsidy.
But not students attending Hantsport School.
