Celebrating Community: wins Awesome Hantsport Award

(LR) Marie Doucette, Lindsey Atwell, Bryanna MacKenzie, Julia Newcombe, and Stella Ducarme.

Hantsport teacher Marie Doucette won the first Awesome Hantsport Award of $1200 for her Celebrating Community project on September 20 at HMCC. Four students of her Grade 4/5 class helped in her presentation to the AHA trustees and the public.

Marie was inspired by her students' confusion and concern about the proposed dissolution of the town. To counter this, she felt it was important for the students to become excited about the town of Hantsport.

Marie outlined the timeline for her project, funds required, collaborative partners, and longterm benefits.
Students will research aspects past and present of Hantsport. They will use the information to create a permanent art display.

Local artist Elizabeth Sircom will help build the living book.  And they will write a script and produce a play featuring figures from various centuries. Music teacher Roger Taylor will write an original score for the play.

Samara Millin aimed her project at adding much needed colour to the town. It involved installing and painting picnic tables and bird houses particularly on the HMCC grounds.

Karen Peterson's project also involved adding visible life, atmosphere, and personality to the town's appearance. She lived in Bridgewater and has many ideas to make this possible.

Chairperson Lorraine McQueen made the presentation to Marie. She also encouraged Samara and Karen to make proposals in the new year for the second AHA. Each trustee donated $100 to fund the project.
