Chimney Swift sites in area
The following was posted on August 17.
A most amazing sight - to see a flock of swifts funnel into a nest - like smoke in reverse.

hi folks,
In the past couple of weeks five chimneys in the Valley (4 new sites) have
been found to be occupied by Chimney Swifts:
- Ruth Butler's house, Wolfville (she welcomes any visitors to see the adults
entering or to hear the young in the nest from the attic);
- the EKM in Wolfville
- an apartment on Leverett Ave. in Kentville (known site)
- the United Church in Kentville
- the Capitol Pub in Middleton
In case you are interested and available for some chimney watches in the
next two weeks, there seems to still be a lot of nesting activity
happening. There are a number of sites in Wolfville with some great
potential, if you have some time or a video camera. Some of the best are:
- *Wolfville Elementary School *(it is not known whether this chimney is
still open!)
- *Southwest chimney on U-Hall*
- *Alumni Hall, Acadia*
- *Blomidon Inn*
- *an apartment building on Linden Ave, Wolfville*
- *Seminary House, Acadia*
- four adjacent buildings immediately south of the BAC, Acadia: *Wong
International Centre, Hayward House, Godfrey House, Bancroft House*
Watches starting 1h before sunset and continuing to 30 mins after sunset
have been profitable. This is the protocol adopted by Manitoba Swiftwatch
which is good for detecting nesting evidence (in the 30 mins before
'roosting hour', which they define as 30 mins before, to 30 mins after
sunset), and roosting evidence (during 'roosting hour'). Sunset is
currently around 8:37 pm these days.
Based on studies at nest sites, in August, adults can be making daytime
feeding visits as frequently as every 20 mins so watches any time during
the day can also be profitable.
Please let me know if you are available and interested or have a video
camera you can lend; the window of opportunity closes as August progresses!
thanks!
