HOW STUPID CAN WE GET?
The labour saving devices which have been invented and incorporated into our lives during the past century are stupendous. There are literally tens of thousands of examples of how these devices have saved us time and effort. I give you one personal example:
I was the Captain’s secretary aboard a little minesweeper in 1951 and I had to type letters with sometimes up to 6 carbon copies. I had to carefully load the typewriter carriage with 6 pages, interspersed with 5 sheets of carbon paper. I had to strike the typewriter forcefully, especially the little fingers, to ensure the copies were made. When I made a mistake, I had to wind the carriage back and with a small blade scrape the carbon off for each mistake and for each of the 5 copies. I then had to address envelopes for each of the copies and they were mailed. I also had to keep a copy on files which I had to make and maintain.
Today my computer automatically corrects any mistakes and I can send copies to as many people as I want with a couple of finger flicks. I can file the letter in a similar fashion.
All politicians today are promising to create more jobs by cutting taxes, running a deficit, increasing the military, building infrastructure, building pipelines, windfarms, solar panels, etc.,etc.,
When I began working, the work week was 5 ½ days and it was changed to 5 days. The sky didn’t fall.
The obvious solution to unemployment is to change the work week to 4 days – but I guess we are too stupid to make the change – just like we are too stupid to stop burning fossil fuels and ..well I could go on and on . . .
