Town council meeting: new library?, progress on budget, decisions on winery proposal and William Hall sign

 April 2 Town Council report.

Hantsport Town Council will look at potential sites for the Hantsport Public Library. Despite the closure of Minas Basin Pulp & Power, improvements can be made in the town, according to Mayor Rob Zwicker. The subject came up at the town council meeting on April 2.The mostly likely site is the old town hall on William Street which the town owns. That is a significant advantage.
The Hantsport Public Library is alive and well and thriving, according to Regional Librarian Frances Newman (below) of the Annaapolis Valley Regional Library (AVRL) who spoke at the meeting.

In the past three years, many improvements were made to the library. New programmes offered. Free 1-on-1 computer tutorials through the CAP program. Saturday open hours. More use by the general public. More space. The Friends of the Hantsport Public Library's activities raise the profile of the library.
Currently the school board and the AVRB share the space but little else. Result: confusion. Two librarians. Two computer systems. One set of books for students and one set for the public. The advantage to the town is that the town library use the space at no charge.
The issue is arising now beecause the school will be renovated soon.
Two options for the library: to stay in the school in a separate wing OR to find a separate location.
It is the dream of the Friends of the Hantsport Public Library  and the AVRL for Hantsport to have a separate public library with wheelchair accessibility, a street front presence, one set of policies, open mornings & early afternoons & evenings & Saturdays, and a larger variety of programs. "A library that everyone in town knows where it is and is proud of." There are 79 public libraries in Nova Scotia. Only three are combination school/public libraries. They are Port Hawkesbury, Greenfield, and Hantsport.
"It is gratifying that the Council is considering providing the public library with a new location and an opportunity for its growth and development. The Old Town Hall building may or may not be practical but I am hopeful that a decision will be made soon," Lorraine McQueen, Chair of the Friends committee  stated.
The school board rep and the engineer in charge of renovations will attend COW in May.
The 2013 - 2014 budget is nearly ready to be presented to council at a regular meeting or at a special meeting, according to CAO Rob Frost.
Council discussed the request from local wineries for money to promote the area. It will ask for a business plan.
Members of the Hantsport & Area Historical Society asked Council to write a letter to MP Chuck Porter asking for the inaccuracies on the William Hall sign to be made and for the sign to be moved to HWY 101. Council will do that. Mayor Rob Zwicker was adamant about moving the sign.
