Pileated woodpecker.
Chrome photo.
That's where it was - really! |
I was sitting at my computer writing about Farley Mowat. To the right of it is an open window and a maple tree about 15 feet away.
I heard a funny tapping.
I looked out and saw a pileated woodpecker on the trunk of the tree. Close-up! It was huge. Larger than a crow.
I grabbed my camera but the bird retreated to the other side of the tree trunk.
Mary Pyke pointed one out to me a few years ago. It was climbing a pole by the railroad station.
