Tidal Bore at Mantua

Local phenomenon at Mantua.

Years ago someone told me he was disappointed to see the tidal bore on the St. Croix River at Mantua in West Hants."I expected to see a huge boar racing down the river," he told me.

Hardly.

Just as the tide first starts to come in after low tide at the full moon, the water comes in as a wave of water particularly visible in a narrow river bed such as the St. Croix River. The wave is not spectacular but the water which flows in behind quickly fills up the river bed.

On July 31, visitors from  Cambridge (England), Stirling (Scotland), Toronto and a local resident were on hand to view the tidal bore.

We heard the roar of the bore before we saw it. This was our firsts view of it.
Imagine what it was like for the early settlers when they saw this phenomenon. It must have been impossible to cross that mud.

The onward rush of the tide.

The river bed fills up quickly.

Exit 5 takes you from HWY. Follow the Wentworth Road to Sweets Corner.
Left on HWY 14.  Cross the river. Turn left. There's the bridge.
