Missing Davison Iron Fence Found!

A few years ago an ornamental wrought iron fence surrounding the graves of Asa and Rhoda Davison was removed from Riverbank Cemetery. Longtime resident Dale Janes tracked down the fence to the dump in Ellershouse. She contacted the manager and retrieved several pieces which she has installed in her back garden. Dale is willing to donate some of the pieces to the Heritage Garden.

(Above) The Memorial Garden Committee members learned about a possible donation after the ceremony. Members Rosemary Stirrit and Wheet Wilcox looked at the pieces which Dale has repaired and restored. They will ask that future of the fence be discussed at the historical society's regular meeting on November 25 at 7:30 PM at the Anglican Church Hall.

  1. In October 2014, I conducted my annual cemetery tour here in town. I walked the area to make sure everyone was where they were supposed to be. BUT the ornate iron fence surrounding the gravestones of Asa Rhoda Davison was missing. I mentioned it the next day on the tour. Dale Janes was on the tour. She is familiar with the cemetery and was concerned. She made some phone calls and discovered it was the dump. She made three trips to pick up the pieces. She is now offering all or some of them to the cemetery..
Years ago there would have been fences around family plots. This was the last one. We don't know when it was erected but this Davison couple contributed many generations of seamen and captains.
The family erected the fence to honour their ancestors who were the first of that family to settle in Hantsport.
Several years ago the town or someone paid Sam Schurman to repair the fence. And he did it in such a way that when the earth shifted, the fence could be adjusted. But Sam died and I was the only one who knew the secret.

    What do you think?
