Eclipse Sunday Evening, September 27

(A "Heads Up" from Roy Bishop)

Sunday evening there is a total eclipse of the Moon. Several circumstances make it an event not to be missed:

A total lunar eclipse conveniently placed in a clear, relatively warm, evening sky is rare, occurring only a very few times in a lifetime.

1. The weather forecast indicates a clear sky Sunday evening.

2. It is the annual Harvest Moon, the full Moon closest to the autumnal equinox.

3. From Nova Scotia, the entire eclipse will be visible, with the Moon well above the horizon.

4. Simultaneous with the eclipse, the Moon will be especially close to Earth, making it appear as large as is possible.
Technical version: The Moon's orbit around Earth is an ellipse, and Sunday evening the Moon is at perigee. A particularly close perigee accompanies syzygy because of the tidal influence of the Sun on the lunar orbit.
Media hype version: It will be a SuperMoon, a blood-red SuperMoon because of the eclipse!

The Canadian Horse at the Ex on Sunday!

Visitors to the Hants County Exhibition 250th will have a chance to see the Canadian horse breed which first arrived in Canada in 1663.

LINK

Six of them will be in the Rare Breeds sections of the livestock building this weekend.

And they will in the arena on Sunday at 1:30 PM.

These horses have a marvellous and long history.

The following is from the Canadian Horse Association Rocky Mountain District website:

The History of the Canadian Horse!

The Canadian horse was first introduced to New France in 1663. The first load of twelve horses was sent via ship by King Louis XIV. There is no record of the breed or region of France from hence they came; some writings mentioned the Royal Stud Farm, and it is believed that most of the horses came from similar ancestries as the Belgian, Percheron, Breton and Dales Pony. What is known for certain is that shipments arrived on a regular basis.

OUR VISIONARY: LORRAINE

EDITORIAL

The grand opening of the Isabel and Roy Jodrey Memorial Library yesterday was truly grand.
Everyone who was generous with their time, labour, and money was recognized.

Except Lorraine McQueen. Lorraine was the one who started it all.

Lorraine surrounded by library supporters including Lois Burgess on the left.
A few years ago, Lois whispered that the Friends could put on an "event" featuring the Shamrocks.
It was one of our most successful ones.
When this former Head Librarian at Acadia University moved to Hantsport in 2004, she told me and others, "We need a store-front stand-alone library on Main Street." That was her vision.

I thought at the time that the library in the school was good enough for Hantsport. But I came to believe that she was right. I am convinced that without her there would be no library in town today.

And now we have  a store-front stand-alone library in Hantsport. The huge turnout yesterday shows that many of us are grateful for her vision. And for everyone who made it possible.

Yesterday I felt like interrupting the ceremony and asking, "Aren't we going to recognize Lorraine's contribution?" But, for once in my life I kept quiet.

After the ceremony, I was talking with some of the original members of the Friends of the Hantsport Public Library. I expressed my disappointment that little credit was given to Lorraine. To my delight, they agreed.

To quote the Bible, "Where there is no vision, the people perish."

Pics of the event to follow - asap.

MY DAY AT THE EX .# 1

THE 250th HANTS COUNTY EXHIBITION!

I am a city girl born and bred in London, Ontario.
But each September my friends and I headed to the Western Fair - South-Western Ontario, that is.
Our first stop was the Livestock Building.
And where did I head on Saturday?  The Livestock Building.
Why?
My grandfather John MacGregor grew up on a farm near Thedford, Ontatio.

And it's even better here! OXEN!!

RARE SIGHTING  - A WOMAN TEAMSTER

EVERY DETAIL  (!) IS IMPORTANT.

"I FEEL PRETTY, OH SO PRETTY ..."

"ENOUGH FOR TWO?"

"SLOW, BOSS."

THE JUDGING,

HOW STUPID CAN WE GET?

HOW STUPID CAN WE GET?

The labour saving devices which have been invented and incorporated into our lives during the past century are stupendous. There are literally tens of thousands of examples of how these devices have saved us time and effort. I give you one personal example:

I was the Captain’s secretary aboard a little minesweeper in 1951 and I had to type letters with sometimes up to 6 carbon copies.  I had to carefully load the typewriter carriage with 6 pages, interspersed with 5 sheets of carbon paper.  I had to strike the typewriter forcefully, especially the little fingers, to ensure the copies were made.  When  I made a mistake, I had to wind the carriage back and with a small blade scrape the carbon off  for each mistake and for each of the 5 copies. I then had to address envelopes for each of the copies and they were mailed. I also had to keep a copy on files which I had to make and maintain.

Today my computer automatically corrects any mistakes and I can send copies to as many people as I want with a couple of finger flicks. I can file the letter in a similar fashion.

All politicians today are promising to create more jobs by cutting taxes, running a deficit, increasing the military, building infrastructure, building pipelines, windfarms, solar panels, etc.,etc.,

When I began working, the work week was 5 ½  days and it was changed to 5 days. The sky didn’t fall.
The obvious solution to unemployment is to change the work week to 4 days – but I guess we are too stupid to make the change – just like we are too stupid to stop burning fossil fuels and ..well I could go on and on . . .

HUGE BENEFIT FOR CANN-TRACEYS

Serji Tracey with his grandmother Joyce Cann
The Hantsport Fire Hall started to hop on Saturday, September 19 at 10 AM for Serji Tracey's Benefit.

On Canada Day, the 3 years old boy was operated on to drain the large tumour at the base of his brain and the tumour was removed.  Both procedures were successful.

Because the tumour may develop again, Serji will undergo weeks of radiation treatments to prevent this.

He loves to play with Kurt his twin and cats.

Serji and Kurt are twin sons of Andrea Cann and Dean Tracey.

Brother Kurt and mom Andrea having ball!

Businesses from across the area donated generously. And people from across the area flocked to contribute to the benefit and to bid and buy.

Romans' Family Benefit Auction

The Romans' Family Benefit scheduled for September 26th at the Hantsport Baptist Church Fellowship Hall is being well supported with donations of auction items. Shirley Bishop says: "Community support is awesome.  We already have over 100 items to be sold in our silent and live auction.  It will be a fun evening with all funds going to support Margaret, Audrey and Bill. There are some unique and noteworthy items such as a week-end stay at Raye Myles' Lighthouse cottage and a signed print by internationally acclaimed landscape artist David Howells.  Some lucky bidder will get four decadent desserts each Friday for four weeks courtesy of Hantsport home-chef Rob Lewis."
